Often times, career advisors meet with highly involved students who feel directionless when it comes to finding meaning and connecting their academic and extracurricular experiences. In this three-part series, we will discuss how to: connect your experiences, know your skills, and tell your story.
Knowing Your Skills
Through your various experiences, you are most likely gaining either knowledge or skills (or both). In order to articulate your story, it is important for you to be reflective on the value of your experiences to know what you are gaining. From a career perspective, your knowledge and your skills are your currency. So, what do you have to offer?
According to the National Association for Colleges and Employers, an organization that works collaboratively to best prepare college students for employment, there are eight core skill areas that define a college graduate’s readiness to enter the workforce. Those skills areas include:
- Critical Thinking/Problem Solving
- Oral/Written Communication
- Digital Technology
- Professionalism/Work Ethic
- Career Management
- Global/Intercultural Fluency
Full definitions of each of these skill areas can be found here. To brainstorm your competency in these skill areas, try listing a time and/or place from your current or past experiences where you have demonstrated mastery in that area. It’s ok if you don’t have experiences to fit all of the skill areas. That actually might mean that you may want to seek out experiences to engage that gap in skill.
