“Is it too early to start looking for internships?!”
This is one question that I have been receiving a lot lately from students and my answer is always an enthusiastic “No!”
There is no magic time to begin internship searching. It can often be dependent upon the hiring timeline of the industry you’re seeking, but in general, you can begin looking for a summer internship as soon as you’re back on campus in the fall.
Before thinking about concrete actions of the internship search, take some time to reflect on what type of opportunity you want to pursue. Do you already have a desired career field and want to dive in? Maybe you still have a few different ideas about careers, or are completely undecided? Having a conversation with a career advisor will help you to narrow your options and find some areas to focus on.
First, you will want to create or update your resume and also learn about how to write cover letters. Preparing your career documents early will help you to meet internship deadlines. Next, it’s important to create an action plan for your search and locate resources that will help you to find position postings. SpiderConnect is a resource that includes multiple databases of internship opportunities for you to use in your search, every student has an account and it’s a great way to find out what organizations are looking for Spider interns.
If this post has inspired you to get started your search, I encourage you to come to our Internship Prep Workshop on Wednesday, November 13 from 5-6pm in THC 321. This program will help you to understand the importance of internships, find resources for searching, and create a personalized action apply. RSVP via SpiderConnect.
By starting your internship search process early you will have more time to think about what to pursue, network and make connections in your desired field, and you will feel organized and prepared to take action and find a great opportunity. As you start the process we encourage you to come in and meet with a career advisor and we can provide you with more advice specific to your personal interests.
