The Office of Alumni and Career Services’ motto is “Visit us early and often.” What does this mean and why is it important? It means that the earlier you connect with our office, during your freshman or sophomore year, the easier it is to help you paint a clearer picture of your personal career plan for the future.
It’s a common misconception that our office is only here to help seniors who are looking for full-time jobs, but we do much more than that! When we encourage younger students to come visit us they always ask me “what does Career Services have for me?” While we do help graduating students with their job search, career development starts much earlier in your college career.
First, we work with students to help them discover their interests and abilities. By learning about your specific interests and what you are passionate about inside and outside the classroom, there are particular resources and career paths we can suggest that you look into. We also offer several different assessments to help you discover information about your interests and personality. This is important information to understand before considering different career paths.
Next, we assist students with conducting research and narrowing down different major and career options. Even if you don’t have a clue about what you want to major in, we can help to guide you with making that decision.
Our office has a four-year plan of action to help you create an individualized path to success. Check out our plan here for some more details on steps that we encourage you to take each year of college.
Have I convinced you yet? Even if you don’t have a specific question on your mind I invite you to schedule an appointment to come in and meet with a career advisor. We would love to learn more about you and assist you as you begin to decide on your major and career path! Give us a call at (804) 289-8547 or stop by our office, THC 306, to schedule an appointment.
